Welcome to Malware Crypt tspatrick,

No infection showing here, though missing photos is not usually something infection might do. You do have IObit's Advanced SystemCare installed and running. I find that when this program is installed and active, problems are soon to follow. Too often acts like "Advanced SystemWreckingBall" than helpful. I would recommend uninstalling it, but if by chance it is involved in the files being missing, for now just see if you can disable it from starting.

Let's get a more detailed look at things, as well as check for these pictures.

Click here and download the 64 bit version of jpshortstuff's SystemLook to your desktop, then click that file to open the scan display. In the open textbox, copy and paste the following hilighted script:

:filefind
*.jpg

Then click Look. Once the scan completes Notepad will open. That will also be saved as a log where you have the scan file, named SystemLook.txt. Don't post that log (it'll be a honker), but look through it, and see if you recognize some of these missing picture files. If so, choose one or two and post back here where they are located on the computer.

----------

The system is Windows 7, so when running any of the scan files we use, be sure to right click the file, then select "Run as administrator" to start the scan/tool.

And To make sure you have an accurate view of files there, make sure you can View Hidden Files. Also uncheck "Hide Extensions for Known File Types"

To keep them from interfering with the repairs, be sure to temporarily disable all antivirus/anti-spyware softwares while these steps are being completed. This can usually be done through right clicking the software's Taskbar icons, or accessing each software through Start - Programs. Here are some antivirus disable tips if needed.

--------

Download RSIT (random's system information tool) from here to your desktop. Then click on the RSIT.exe to open the RSIT display, and click the Continue button.

If RSIT downloads/installs HijackThis be sure to agree to the install of that.

Once the scan completes a textbox will open - copy/paste those contents here for review please. The log can also be found at C:\rsit\log.txt.

RSIT will also create a second log, info.txt, which will be minimized to your taskbar. Post that here as well please (it will also be stored at C:\rsit\info.txt).

You can break logs into parts and use separate posts here when replying and posting the log files, if needed.

Here are 3 of the many images found from the SystemLook scan.

Okay, those all look OK too. So at least these pictures are located in C:\Users\Wendy\Pictures. What are the ones missing?

Petra, another malware removal pro, has been watching our progress here, and gave me a nudge about this:

C:\Users\Wendy\Pictures\Athens botanical gardens\DSC01089.JPG   --ah--- 2895490 bytes   [16:51 06/10/2010]   [18:21 02/05/2010] B5F8745DECE7B0042546377878E88FFD
C:\Users\Wendy\Pictures\Athens botanical gardens\DSC01090.JPG   --ah--- 2766744 bytes   [16:51 06/10/2010]   [18:21 02/05/2010] F5EEDC8E02BB7DAADB0BC2EE71C19BDD
C:\Users\Wendy\Pictures\Athens botanical gardens\DSC01091.JPG   --ah--- 2772043 bytes   [16:51 06/10/2010]   [18:21 02/05/2010] 4D65ABEDE76D2C2C2B87BC5C119586B7

So these are hidden from view, unless a person makes sure they can View Hidden Files.

Since I am not aware of any pictures that have a legit reason to be hidden from casual viewing, you'll need to can change those. I will have to check with some very skilled in some command line steps we'll need to do, so will check with her on this.

Do the following please:

Go to Start Search, type cmd.exe in the Start Search box. Cmd.exe will appear at the top of the Menu. Rightclick on it and choose "Run as administrator".  At the prompt copy/paste the following, pressing Enter after each:

cd\

attrib /s -h C:\*.jpg >log.txt 2>&1&log.txt

Allow that to run. When it finishes, a log file will open in Notepad, showing any errors that occurred while making the changes> If it is empty, we can assume no errors occurred. Then just check to see if your pictures now show.

sorry for the delay in my response.  that somewhat worked.  Some images are now shown but only the ones directly in the pictures folder.  All images in sub-folders are not showing.  Also, all sub-folders of MY PICTURES are hidden as well.  There are also no items in the LIBRARY, the library is blank.  I tried adding the PICTURES folder to the library and it stated it was already there.  It seems that folders and files are hidden.  How can I unhide the folder?

Good, but I need to know the specifics still, to be sure. If you make sure you can View Hidden Files, this is the only way you can see these sub-folder pictures? Are these .jpg files? Better, what files types are still hidden, that are not normally hidden please?
