I have a Dell Insperion. I upgraded to Win 7. The PC is 5 yrs old but has been running fine. Today I boot the PC today and the Dell splash screen comes up with the option to press F2 or F12. The Windows screen willl not come up. The keyboard light is dead. I moved the usb keyboard to all of the other usb ports and it is still dead. I tested the keyboard on my laptop and it works fine. So it appears my usb ports are toast. I don't have ps2 on this mother board so I need the usb ports. Is this a driver issue or is my mother board toast?

I forgot to mention that I get one beep at start up and no errors on the screen.

Welcome to MalwareCrypt westcoastnative,
I had actually reviewed your post earlier, but needed to ponder what you posted. Not real sure it's a factor of keyboards or usb ports, but something else. What is the model of this laptop please - usually show on a panel on the bottom?

It's the Dell Inspiron 530 - Core 2 Duo E4600 2.4 GHz desktop. I created a boot disk but I can't get into the boot.ini in the bios to change the boot order. It just stops on the Dell splash screen. Is this maybe a catastrophic HD failure?

Are there lights on the back - green/amber, that you can post back on the sequence that shows?
Also if there is more than one stick of Ram, remove one and try to boot. If nothing, replace that and remove the other. Move sticks from slot to slot. Just some normal procedures to eliminate RAM as the issue.
Power supply may also have dropped a leg somewhere, but the lights might show that. Dell beep codes for your system don''t mention one beep as something to work from.

Solid green light Blinking Amber at the J45 jack.
4 sticks of RAM. Removed one at a time. No difference until I removed the last stick. No ram beeps twice. Put RAM back in one at a time. Beeps 1 time now.
New issue. I get a "Signal not detected" on the monitor. Not sure why. Never removed video card. Now the On/off button only turns on not off.

The one beep is a good post for Compaq computers. I think the 530 uses a Compaq motherboard.

Could this be an OS issue? I upgraded to Win 7 about a month ago.

No, unlikely due to that upgrade. But not impossible. Dell usually uses Dell specific motherboards. A chance it could be the power supply (PSU). Maybe the board connector - yellow and black wires to a four pin connector on the motherboard. That would suggest why graphics aren't bring pushed - that "Signal not detected" message. Starting to seem like that, aside from a failing motherboard. Any swollen capacitors on the motherboard?

Signal not connected error didn't come up until I removed and reinstalled the RAM. There are two capacitor that are close together but I'm not sure if they are swollen. I guess what I need to know is how can I narrow it down to whether it's the Hard Drive(s) or the Motherboard without going out and spending a bunch of money. One thing I didn't mention is that it uses 2 SATAII hard drives in a Raid 10 setup. It came that way from the factory. Thanks for your time and help.
