Default HP Pavilion dv2000/dv6000/dv9000 "recalls"

I have seen too many of the following HP/Compaq laptops experiencing this same problem, so wanted to post this info to make it more available. These products:

HP Pavilion dv2000/dv6000/dv9000 series notebook PC

Compaq Presario V3000/V6000 series notebook PC

That have the series and product number from the linked lists at this HP website all need an important BIOS upgrade. If they do not get that, this can lead to a situation where they no longer boot up, or even start in any manner.

One of the telltale signs I have seen occurring prior to the failure is an unusual gray/black mottling on the screen. In two of the failures I have dealt with so far HP did provide free shipping and repairs. The other is in the process of contacting them.

If you do have one of these models that have failed, do know that your drive will be reset to factory install, so you will lose all personal data as part of the repair processes.
