Having the heck of a time installing an internal PCI dial-up modem.
Went to CTH Networking forum, but the issue is still not resolved. Have not asked about the following, but I do not think it is an issue: The IBM ThinkCentre S51 8171 has the following slots: Slot 1: half length, 1 lane PCI Express (graphics) - already has a card in it Slot 2: full height, half length, 32-bit PCI 2.2 (5v) - connected modem here Slot 2 looks like this: 32-bit PCI connector, 5V: ![]() Connected the PCI modem to it without any problem…would think that it is not possible to make a mistake when connecting a PCI card into a PCI slot. If the card goes in correctly, it should be compatible, shouldn‘t it??? Last edited by Aaflac; 07-16-2009 at 05:30 AM. |

Not the best of ideas running two threads Aff. Issues resolved here then are not known in the other, since this one is unseen. You have cable, and from what you have been posting are connecting it to a dial-up modem? Plug the wall cable into the Charter modem, then run the Cat5 cable (fat phone plug-looking thing) from that to the ethernet port on the pc (the one near the mouse/keyboard plugs, if it is internal). Go to Network connection, right click the local connection and select Properties. Click TCP/IP and click Properties. Make sure it is set to obtain an IP address and DNS server addresses automatically. If Charter gave you a disk it is easiest to just run that in the pc to have it help with the correct setup.

Thanks for the info, Jin.
I’m really not running two threads, though. The thread at CTH deals with connecting the computer to a modem, cable, or, dial-up. As far as connecting the computer directly to cable modem, was not able to do that yesterday, and I had checked all the settings you mentioned. Finally, very late last night, decided to recycle the modem, and it finally worked. Looks as if I’ll be resetting the cable modem every time I want to use the IBM Think Centre (TC) connected to the cable modem, but that is OK. Would rather connect thru a PCI dial-up modem, but that remains an issue addressed on the CTH thread. The issue here is just asking about general PCI card connection to a PCI slot. The computer is a small form factor, but the PCI card went into the PCI slot without any problems. Just want to confirm that if it fit, it is gooood.

Okay. Anyone can always pitch in with ideas at the CTH thread if you all don't get it worked out.
