Default Javascript problem...

Some friends have strange things happening on web pages that leads one to believe it is a javascript issue, i.e., buttons not there, or do not work, boxes missing, etc.

XP - Control Panel > Internet Options > Security tab > Custom level > Active Scripting is Enabled

Trying to come up with a way to solve the problem.

Any suggestions?

Has anyone tried Dial-a-Fix on this type of thing?

Hello Aaflac,

should help to know which Java version is installed and on which site this things happen. Does this happen whith Firefox or IE or with both browsers? If only with Firefox you should have a look into the FF options if there Java/Javascript is disabled. Perhaps it is required not Javascript but Java.

Enable Java in IE 7

These instructions are for enabling (or disabling) Java in Internet Explorer 7.x.

* Click the Tools button (or menu) and then select Internet Options.
* Select the Advanced tab.
* Scroll down to the Java (Sun) category. It's probably about half way down.
* Check the box to enable or disable Java.

These instructions are for enabling (or disabling) Java in Mozilla Firefox.

1. Start Mozilla Firefox browser or restart it if it is already running.
2. Select Tools => Options.
3. Dialog box: Options
4. Click Web Features => Select Enable Java

Have a look, if on this machine are installed more than one Java version and let him uninstall old versions. I don't think that Dial-a-fix helps here.

Thanks for the help, Petra!!

The problem is happening in quite a few websites. It first started in Yahoo mail, but niw it has gone beyond there.

It also happens using either browser.

Talking to them tomorrow (Saturday), and will find out more info.

Merry Christmas, every one!!

On the continuing problem...

The latest Java version is installed, and Java is enabled in IE7, etc.

Last attempt was to do a System Restore, and even that does not work. They keep getting "Your computer cannot be restored..."

Wondering whether a Repair install of XP will correct the issue, or whether to suggest they just re-install XP.

Any thoughts??

Christmas greetings to you as well. If you check the steps done here Aaflac, the idea in that was that Flash Player was the culprit, and to actually use an uninstaller, as opposed to Add/Remove Programs. There have been many odd and seemingly unrelated problems that eventually lead to a Flash Player issue.

Thanks, Jin!!

This is what I posted, after going thru the thread were you directed the User on how to solve the problem:

Code:
Download and run the actual Flash Player uninstaller for Windows:
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html

Now, download the latest version of Flash Player (green button in upper right of page):
http://www.filehippo.com/download_flashplayer_ie/

Close all open browsers and temporarily disable any security software.
Run the Flash Player uninstaller.

Reboot, don't open any browsers, and again, make sure any security software is disabled.

Click and install the latest version of Flash Player.

Reboot, then check for change.
Thanks for your help.

These folks have tried a multitude of approaches, but nothing works. They were about ready to do a full install of XP, but now they are also considering Linux.

I have to assume the very latest Flash Player install has been updated to correct the many problems that have been occurring. At the time that thread I linked to was current the latest Flash Player install was the problem.

Well, they struck out once again...

Flash Player was not it.

I am sure they are going to do a full install.

I think I just picked up on the Javascript ideas, and didn't check the presenting problem very thoroughly. And your first reference about Dial-a-Fix is actually something they should try. At least these:

ActiveX controls/codecs
Explorer/IE/OE/shell/WMP

And maybe the Object linking libraries (OLE) as well.
